Relevance and importance of the project: Cryopreservation of reproductive cells is considered to be the most effective and preferable way of storage of gene pool of aquaculture, industrial, rare and endangered fish species. Study of the influence of cryopreservation and long-term low-temperature storage factors on the morphofunctional characteristics of sperm of valuable industrial and endangered fish, which have been stored for more than 30 years in a unique collection of genetic resources, is relevant and promising for understanding the mechanisms of cryoresistence in fish, and for developing more efficient cryopreservation technologies for their genetic material. The collection of sperm of carp, sturgeon and salmon fish of the IPCC NAS of Ukraine is unique. It has been collected from various regions of Eurasia from 1980s and was stored in cryobanks of Rybne (Moscow oblast, Russia) and in Kharkiv. Unfortunately, the material stored in Russian cryobank has been ruined in 1990s. Thus, the samples of genetic material of many species and varieties of fish are kept only in the cryobank of IPCC NAS of Ukraine and are of outstanding importance, having no analogies elsewhere in the world. Aim and main tasks of the scientific project: The aim of the project is to investigate the influence of cryopreservation factors and long-term low-temperature storage on morphofunctional characteristics and DNA integrity of sperm of valuable industrial, rare and endangered fish, which have been stored in a unique collection of genetic resources for over 30 years. Expected scientificl results of the research project: Factors influencing the reduction of morphofunctional characteristics of sperm after cryopreservation and long-term low-temperature storage (over 30 years) depending on the species of fish will be identified, and effective protocols for cryopreservation of fish gametes will be developed.
