18 квітня 2018 року Національну академію наук України відвідав відомий імунолог і цитолог Жюль Оффман – лауреат Нобелівської премії в галузі фізіології і медицини 2011 року.
Із поважним гостем зустрілися перший віце-президент НАН України, голова Секції фізико-технічних і математичних наук НАН України академік Антон Наумовець, віце-президент НАН України, директор Інституту теоретичної фізики імені М.М. Боголюбова НАН України академік Анатолій Загородній, член Президії НАН України, академік-секретар Відділення біохімії, фізіології і молекулярної біології НАН України, директор Інституту біохімії імені О.В. Палладіна НАН України академік Сергій Комісаренко, президент Національного центру «Мала академія наук України» НАН України та МОН України (МАН) академік Станіслав Довгий.

Нобелівську премію в галузі фізіології і медицини 2011 року Жюлеві Оффману та Брюсу Бойтлеру було присуджено «за дослідження активації вродженого імунітету» (третім лауреатом того року став Ральф Стейнман – «за відкриття дендритних клітин і вивчення їхньої ролі для набутого імунітету»). Вважається, що дослідження Ж. Оффмана щодо активації вродженого імунітету допоможуть успішно боротися з пухлинними й іншими захворюваннями, в основі яких лежить порушення імунної відповіді.
У 1996 році Ж. Оффман зі своїми колегами досліджував гени, відповідальні за стійкість дрозофіли до інфекцій. Він пішов традиційним шляхом: отримав серію мутантних ліній і заражав мух бактеріями або грибками. При цьому виявив, що дрозофіли, мутантні за геном Toll, дуже чутливі до грибкових інфекцій. Toll був відомий як один із генів, котрі контролюють ембріональний розвиток. Але Ж. Оффман дійшов висновку, що продукт гену Toll бере участь також у виявленні патогенних мікроорганізмів і активація цього гена необхідна для успішного захисту від них. У дрозофіл є 9 Toll білків, які розпізнають різні патогени.
Б. Бойтлер досліджував вроджений імунітет ссавців. Він шукав рецептор, що пов’язує токсичний ліпосахарид (ЛПС) бактеріальної клітинної стінки, котрий викликає септичний шок і гіперстимуляцію імунної системи. У 1998 році Б. Бойтлер спільно з колегами встановив, що роль рецептора виконує білок гена, подібного до Toll-гена дрозрофіли (Toll-like receptor, TLR). Взаємодія Toll-подібних рецепторів із ЛПС призводить до синтезу сигнальних молекул, котрі викликають запалення, а якщо ЛПС дуже багато – то до септичного шоку. Миші, мутантні за геном TLR, стійкі до дії ліпосахарида. Ці відкриття показали, що ссавці та дрозофіли використовують для активації вродженого імунітету подібні молекули і більшість генів, залучених у захисну систему дрозофіли, гомологічні або дуже близькі до генів вродженого імунітету ссавців.
Дослідження Ж. Оффмана та Б. Бойтлера спровокували лавину досліджень вродженого імунітету. У людини й тварин уже виявлено близько десятка різних TLR, кожен із яких розпізнає певні типи молекул, характерних для патогенних мікроорганізмів. Деякі мутації в цих генах викликають особливу чутливість до інфекцій, тоді як інші генетичні варіанти TLR пов’язані з підвищеним ризиком хронічних захворювань.
На думку Нобелівського комітету, ці роботи дали змогу зрозуміти механізм активації фази вродженого імунітету й відкрили новий шлях розвитку профілактики та терапії інфекційних, ракових і запальних захворювань.
Крім Нобелівської премії, в різні роки Ж. Оффману присуджувались інші престижні нагороди, зокрема, Премія імені Вільяма Корі (2003 р.), Премія Роберта Коха (2004 р.), Премія Бальцано (2007 р., спільно з Б. Бойтлером), Премія Кейо з медицини (2010 р.), Премія Шоу (2011 р., спільно з Б. Бойтлером і Р. Меджитовим), Золота медаль Національного центру наукових досліджень (2011 р.).
Академік А. Наумовець привітав зарубіжного колегу в стінах НАН України та розповів про співпрацю Академії з Посольством Французької Республіки, зокрема при проведенні щорічного Всеукраїнського фестивалю науки.
Ж. Оффман зазначив, що приїзд до України – велика честь і велика приємність для нього. Він також поінформував учасників зустрічі про програму свого візиту, до якої увійшли виголошення вітального слова на урочистому відкритті ІІІ етапу Всеукраїнського конкурсу-захисту науково-дослідницьких робіт учнів – членів Малої академії наук України, відкрита лекція «Вроджений імунітет: від комах до людства», розрахована на студентів і молодих учених (обидва виступи мали відбутися 19 квітня 2018 року в Національному технічному університеті України «Київський політехнічний інститут імені Ігоря Сікорського»), а також спілкування з українськими школярами (20 квітня 2018 року).
Академік С. Комісаренко торкнувся досліджень, що проводяться співробітниками відділу молекулярної імунології Інституту біохімії імені О.В. Палладіна НАН України, та згадав відомих французьких учених, із якими мав можливість співпрацювати.
Академік С. Довгий зосередився на роботі МАН і вже згаданому конкурсі, в якому візьмуть участь талановиті діти з усієї України, котрі, серед іншого, матимуть нагоду послухати видатного вченого, який зробив непересічний внесок у розвиток науки.
Академік А. Загородній розповів нобеліатові про структуру й основні напрями діяльності НАН України, в тому числі її міжнародного наукового і науково-технічного співробітництва. Серед зарубіжних партнерів, з якими в Академії склалася плідна співпраця, – й французький Національний центр наукових досліджень (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, CNRS). Як запевнив А. Загородній, Академія відкрита до налагодження та поглиблення взаємодії з колегами з-за кордону.
На завершення зустрічі академік А. Наумовець вручив Ж. Оффману диплом про присвоєння йому звання «Почесний доктор Національної академії наук України» – «за вагомий внесок у розвиток науки, суспільний прогрес, забезпечення миру, взаєморозуміння й співробітництва між народами».
