On October 7, 2020, the election session of the General Meeting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the election of the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine took place.
Due to the need to comply with anti-epidemic measures, the election session of the General Meeting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was held in a dispersed manner with the formation of polling stations and by video conference.
Academician Volodymyr Horbulin, Acting President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine chaired the meeting.
In accordance with the Statute of the NAS of Ukraine, the election session was attended by academicians and corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine, as well as delegated representatives of scientific teams of the NAS of Ukraine in the amount equal to half of the registered members and corresponding members participating in the General Meeting.
It will be recalled that five candidates have been nominated for the post of the President of the National Academy of Sciences. Among them are academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vladyslav Goncharuk, Bohdan Danylyshyn, Anatoly Zagorodny, Serhiy Komisarenko, and Volodymyr Semynozhenko. On the eve of the election, Academician Bohdan Danylyshyn withdrew his candidacy. Therefore, before the start of voting, in the presence of observers, the surname, name and patronymic of Danylyshyn Bohdan were deleted from the ballots.
During the meeting, all candidates for the post of the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine had the opportunity to present their election programs. In a video conference, their speeches were broadcast at all polling stations. Then the participants of the meeting asked questions to the candidates and received comprehensive answers from them. This was followed by a discussion of all candidates and their election programs by representatives from all polling stations.
Then the vote took place.
A total of 637 ballots were distributed. 634 ballots were taken out of the ballot boxes. According to the results of the secret ballot, Academician Vladyslav Goncharuk received 3 votes (0.5% of the vote). 426 voters (67.2%) voted for Academician Anatoly Zagorodny. 68 voters (10.7%) voted for Academician Serhiy Komisarenko. Academician Volodymyr Semynozhenko received 130 votes (20.5%). Against all - 2. Invalid - 5 ballots.
Thus, Academician Anatoly Zagorodny was elected the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

He was born on January 29, 1951 in the village of Velyka Bagachka, Poltava region.
1972 - graduated from the Faculty of Radiophysics, Gorky Kharkiv State University (now – V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University).
1972 - including - at the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, in particular:
1980-1988 - Scientific Secretary;
1989-2002 - Deputy Director for Research;
1996-2016 - Head of the Department of Theory and Modeling of Plasma Processes;
2003 - including - Director.
1978 - defended his dissertation on “Fluctuations and emission spectra of limited plasma” and received the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in “Theoretical Physics”.
1990 - defended his dissertation on “Electromagnetic fluctuations in limited plasma-molecular systems” and received the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in “Plasma Physics”.
1997 - elected a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, majoring in “Theoretical Physics, Plasma Physics”.
1998 - received the scientific title of Professor.
2006 - elected an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, majoring in “Theoretical Physics, Physics of Plasma Processes”.
2009-2011 - Chief Scientific Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
2011-2020 - Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
His scientific works are devoted to the problems of theoretical and mathematical physics, plasma theory and statistical physics. He developed a statistical theory of spatially bounded plasma molecular systems and a sequential kinetic theory of dusty plasma, formulated strict microscopic equations and a chain of Bogolyubov equations for such a plasma, and developed a theory of bremsstrahlung in plasma molecular systems.
