The Gas Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded under National Academy of Sciences in 1949 and now forms part of the Department of Physical and Technical Problems of Power Engineering . Academician N.N.Dobrohotov, a prominent metallurgist, was the Institute’s founder and its first director. Academician V.F.Kopytov - who was the director of the Institute since 1952 to 1985 and academician I.N.Karp, director from 1986 to 2002, contributed greatly to the Institute formation and development. Since 2003, the Institute is headed by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine B.I.Bondarenko.
The rapidly developing gas production industry as well as the necessity to resolve common problems of gas supply and gas utilization in many branches of national economy in the late 1940s caused the foundation of the Institute.
Throughout his activity at the Institute carries out fundamental research in the field of applied theory of combustion, heat transfer , gas dynamics , thermodynamics , kinetics, and other scientific fields, combined with applied research aimed at the development of technologies and equipment for the effective and efficient utilization of natural gas and other fuels in industry, energy, transportation, municipal engineering. The Institute has more than 200 such developments, which are implemented in the enterprises of the former USSR, Ukraine and abroad (Vietnam, U.S.A., India, Algeria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Iran).
Since the first years of Ukrainian independence in the Institute carried out work on the creation of new effective energy-saving technologies in power engineering, metallurgy, building materials production. Got the developments on the use of waste and landfill gases for electricity generation, use of biomass as substitute of natural gas. The Institute conducts active research on nanoliquids creation for energetic, development of scientific bases of technologies for fuels combustion and gasification w
