CYCLONIC ACTIVITY IN THE BLACK SEA-MEDITERRANEAN REGION

The study is dedicated to the analysis of interannual-multidecadal variability of the main parameters of cyclones in the Black Sea-Mediterranean region selected using global NCEP/NCAR reanalyses data sets on the 1000 hPa geopotential height in 1948 – 2006, and associated with global processes in the ocean-atmosphere system: the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), El-Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). It was shown that in winter months on the interannual scale the joint NAO and ENSO influence is responsible for up to 50% of the variance of the frequency of cyclones in the Black Sea region and for up to 25 and 30%, accordingly, of the depth and square variance in the Mediterranean region. It was found that the negative PDO phase in winter-spring months is accompanied by cyclonic activity intensification in the Black Sea-Mediterranean region, while the positive phase is accompanied by its decreasing. It was confirmed that AMO strongly influences the character of cyclonic activity in the Black Sea-Mediterranean region in cold half-year. Specifically the positive AMO phase is characterized by cyclonic activity intensification, while the negative AMO phase is characterized by its weakening. The scheme of the main trajectories of winter Northern hemisphere cyclones under the joint influence of the AMO and PDO is offered. It reflects the following. The combination of the negative phases of the AMO and PDO is accompanied by cyclonic activity intensification in the Black Sea and Mediterranean region, and the combination of the positive PDO phase and negative AMO phase is accompanied by its decreasing.
