MULTIPURPOSE LABORATORY FACILITY FOR X-RAY ANALYSIS OF MATERIALS

The series of the works consists of 9 papers, including 3 articles (2 of it are in SCOPUS database), part in monograph, 1 patent of Ukraine and 4 reports in proceedings of international scientific conferences. Construction of a test-bench is the underlying concept for a classical EDXRF analysis, X-ray fluorescent analysis with a secondary target model and X-ray radiography. Major high voltage and vacuum units were taken from the SELMI electron microscope removed from the service (Ukraine). As electron beam parameters did not meet the specifications (current of a focused electron beam is less them 1 mA), a new electron source was required. Therefore, a new cathode unit was developed on the basis of a three-electrode gun with an indirect filament cathode. A conventional electron-optical system with some improvements allowed an effective transportation of an electron beam into the interaction chamber (above 80 % of generated electrons impinge a target) and a production of an electron beam spot size less than 30 µm on a convertor target. The following scientific and technical results were obtained: The multipurpose laboratory facility was created. There were implemented the following methods of material analysis: X-ray fluorescence in vacuum and in air, X-ray radiography. The calculation and numerical simulation of an electron gun were done for creating an X-ray source The elemental sensitivity was described as a technic of characteristic of X-ray fluorescence analyzers. Using it you can make a qualitative and quantitative comparative analysis of X-ray fluorescence spectrometers. It was shown that the established setting has comparable capability to the world of commercial proposals in this field A unique of X-ray spectrometer with a secondary target model war proposed. It could be used for mapping and confocal analysis. A comprehensive study was done of the cultural heritage artifact using X-ray fluorescence analysis. Unique data was obtained of the characterization of the object of study. The pesticides were described that could be used during the last restoration of the object with feathers.
