Relevance and importance: Underwater welding of high-alloy corrosion-resistant steels is used in the repair of mechanical damage to swimming pools for storage of fuel elements at nuclear power plants. In cases where the level of radiation does not allow personnel to be at the repair site, underwater welding is the only possible method of welding, because the physical properties of the aquatic environment are used as a barrier against radiation. However, welding materials were developed by the author of this work at the Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine allow welding in only fresh water, while welding materials for wet underwater welding of high-alloy corrosion-resistant steels in sea water is virtually non-existent. Given the increasing construction of facilities and structures in the seas and oceans, the study of physical and metallurgical processes occurring in wet underwater welding of high-alloy corrosion-resistant steels in seawater is quite relevant because it will provide requirements for welding materials and further research to develop welding materials and technology for welding these steels in sea salt water. Purpose: To investigate the features of physical and metallurgical processes that occur during wet underwater welding of high-alloy corrosion-resistant steels in seawater and to establish requirements for welding materials that provide the possibility of welding at depths up to 30 meters.
