It is with great sadness that the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and its Department of Physics and Astronomy announce that professor Yurii Sytenko passed away on October 5, 2023. He was the correspondent member of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Department of the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics, winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology and the Synelnykov Award of the NAS of Ukraine, well known for his works in quantum field theory, physics of elementary particles, gravitation, and condensed matter physics.
Yurii Sytenko was born on the second of May, 1951, in Kharkiv. He was the son of the prominent theorist academician Olexiy Sytenko. In 1973 he graduated from Shevchenko State University in Kiev. Since that time for the whole life he worked at the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the NAS of Ukraine.
The results obtained by Yurii Sytenko have enriched Ukrainian and world science in quantum field theory, theory of elementary particles, astrophysics, physics of electromagnetic and magnetic phenomena. He has proved the validity of the Adler principle for isotropic magnetic substances, studied the anion properties in the presence of magnetic vortices, elaborated some reasons of the Casimir force appearance, and established the specifics of the charged particle motion in low-dimension spaces. During recent years he has obtained important results concerning astrophysical and cosmological phenomena.
All those who knew Yurii Sytenko and communicated with him will always fondly remember this highly educated and talented man, bright teacher, a congenial person of open heart.
We express our sincere condolence to the relatives, friends, and colleagues of Yurii. Sytenko.
