Коментуючи оприлюднені на форумі дані про середню тривалість життя в Україні – 63 роки у чоловіків і 73 роки у жінок, – Академік Елла Лібанова зазначила: «На сьогодні в Україні середня тривалість життя не тільки чоловіків, а й населення в цілому нижча, ніж середня по земній кулі, враховуючи Африку й інші країни».
Водночас учена наголосила, що проблема старіння та депопуляції в Україні не найвища в Європі: «Частка населення 65+ (років) в ЄС в середньому 19 %, в Україні — 17 %. Навантаження 60+ (років) на 20-64 (роки), тобто на фактичний, реальний працездатний вік в Україні — 27 %, в ЄС — 31 %. Тобто катастрофічного я нічого такого не бачу».
Також вона підкреслила, що депопуляція відбувається в багатьох країнах, у тому числі в Японії, Німеччині, Італії, Португалії, Греції та інших країнах, де народжується менше, ніж помирає людей: «Тому навіть якщо брати з урахуванням міграції, то також в Україні не найстрашніші цифри у світі», – пояснила Елла Лібанова.
За її словами, основною причиною депопуляції і старіння є довготривале збереження рівня народжуваності настільки низьким, що воно не забезпечує, аби покоління батьків замістилося поколінням дітей: «Для того, щоб покоління батьків замістилося поколінням дітей, тобто, щоб хоча б наступне покоління не було меншим за попереднє, треба, щоб на одну жінку народжувалось 2,13 — 2,15 дитини».
Учена додала, що в Україні з 1960-х років стільки дітей не народжується, і в Європі також стільки не народжується: «Проблема пов'язана не просто із середньою тривалістю життя, не просто із високою смертністю, а з величезною дочасною смертністю».
Як приклад вона навела дані 2019 року, згідно з якими із тисячі 40-річних чоловіків в Україні до 65 років не доживає 343, тоді як у Швейцарії — 81, у Польщі — 210.
