Institute of hydromechanics of NAS of Ukraine was established by decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR ( the decree of 28 December 1963, No. 1480) the reorganization of the Institute of hydrology and hydrotechnics, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Institute of hydrology and hydrotechnics, Academy of Sciences of the USSR was reorganized into the Institute of water management of Ukraine in accordance with the decree of the Presidium of the USSR of may 14, 1938, the Protocol No. 194 Protocol No. 202 dated July 4, 1938
The Institute is administered by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and is part of the Department of mechanics of the NAS of Ukraine.
The Institute is a public, budgetary unprofitable scientific institution with the rights of a legal entity. In its activities it is guided by the current legislation of Ukraine, Charter of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The economic basis of activities of the Institute include government funding , which has two components: the General Fund and the special Fund.
The main task of the Institute is to carry out fundamental and applied research with the aim of obtaining new scientific knowledge, promote scientific and technological progress and socio-economic development of the society in the field of hydromechanics and directions approved by the resolution of the Presidium of ANAS dated 29.09.1998, No. 317.
І
On the initiative of prominent hydrologist, academician Evgeny Vladimirovich Oppokov 30 April 1926 was founded the Ukrainian scientific-research Institute of water management. The Institute's activities were aimed at solving important applied problems of hydraulic engineering in Ukraine.
In 1936, the Institute of water management were transferred to the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and then reorganized into the Institute of hydrology and hydrotechnics, Academy of Sciences of the USSR (decree of the Presidium of the USSR № 202 dated July 4, 1938).
In 1964, the Institute of hydrology and hydrotechnics, Academy of Sciences of the USSR was reorganized into the Institute of Hydromechanics Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 28 December 1963, No. 1408).
Fundamental and applied research in the Institute is carried out in two common research areas:
hydromechanics of moving objects and turbulent flows;
hydromechanics of water jets and hydraulic engineering.
Scientists of the Institute made a significant contribution to the development of hydrodynamics, acoustics, hydraulics and hydraulic engineering. Studies of the interaction of moving bodies with the liquid cover a broad range of speeds from slow motion to motion at speeds close to the speed of sound in water. Work on the study of movement at the speed of sound and patterns of such movement determines the leading position of the Institute in the world. Studies in the speed range, typical of modern submarines and surface ships, helped to develop new methods of managing resistance movement, control the generation of wave disturbances.
