Ukrainian Lingua-Information Foundation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (ULIF NASU) is the Ukraine’s only specialized research institution in the domain of mathematical, applied and computational linguistics.
The principal directions of scientific research of the ULIF are:
- system structure of natural language;
- theoretical, mathematical and applied linguistics;
- compiling and maintaining of fundamental corpora of Ukrainian and other languages;
- development and creation of lingua-information systems (traditional and computer dictionaries, textbooks, training and expert systems, system of natural language processing and network systems of professional interaction in linguistics);
- linguistic aspects of intellectual activities;
- development, implementation and exploration of information systems, data and knowledge bases concerning the domain of culture in general.
For this purpose our institution has carried out a set of basic and applied researches, which have resulted in the formulation of scientific concepts and theories that provide new approaches to the studying and understanding of a natural language as a particular type of information system including:
- theory of lexicographical systems, which in its logical and linguistic status is an equivalent to the theory of formal grammars and its generalization, namely lexicographical environment, lexicographical analysis etc. that have defined a basis of modern linguistic technologies in Ukraine;
- theory of semantic states is the basis for formalized description of a wide range of linguistic phenomena, combining grammatical and lexicographical description of a language system.
