Born September 24, 1955 in the village of Skazinci Mogilev-Podilsky district, Vinnytsia region in the family of collective farmers. He is married and has 2 daughters and a son.
In 1978 he graduated from the Kiev T.G. Shevchenko State University and received the qualification of a geophysical engineer. In 1978-1981 years under the guidance of Professor Z.A. Krutikhovskaya he studied in graduate school of S.I.Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Since 1981, he has been working at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, since 2000 – as head of the department of geomagnetism. In 1986 he defended his thesis at the specialized Scientific Council of S.I.Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the NAS of Ukraine and received the degree of candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences, and in 1999 he became a doctor of geological sciences.
In 1994, he was awarded the academic title of senior research fellow, and in 2017 – of professor. He was awarded the bronze medal of the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements (1985), the Honorary Diploma of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1985), the Distinction of the State Geological Service of Ukraine "For Services in Exploration of the Earth" (2005), Honorary Diploma of the NAS of Ukraine (2015).
Since 2004, he has been teaching at the position of Professor of the Department of Geophysics of the Geological Faculty of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. He was the Head of the State Examination Commission in 2013-2015. He prepared 4 Candidates of Sciences (Sumaruk T.P., 2008; Bakarzhieva M. І., 2010; Romenets A.O., 2016; Drukarenko V.V., 2017).
Member of 2 specialized academic councils for the defence of doctoral theses: D 26.200.01 at S.I. Subbotin Institute of Geophysics, NAS of Ukraine, and D 26.001.32 at Taras Shevchenko Kiev National University.
Member of the editorial boards of special editions "Geophysical Journal", "Geodynamics", “Visnyk Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv GEOLOGY”, "Seismological Bulletin of Ukraine ".
The main direction of his research is the development of geomagnetic maps and the creation of three-dimensional and spatio-temporal magnetic models of the Earth's lithosphere with the purpose of studying its structure, material composition and evolution, forecasting of minerals; solving problems of geophysical and geomagnetic ecology.
Orlyuk M.I. supervised and executed works on 12 departmental and competitive projects of the NAS of Ukraine. He is co-executor of international projects EUROBRIDGE, CEMES, CRENEGON and MagNetE. Within the framework of the Treaty on Bilateral Scientific Cooperation between the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Romanian Academy of Sciences for the period from 2003 to the present time, he is co-director of 5 projects between the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy (DEEP, TRIDEC, INRAF, LODES, ECEEC).
He is the author of 349 publications (87 in English), including 146 scientific ones, in peer-reviewed professional editions, including ones for scientometric databases: Scopus-14, Web of Science-7.
